7 reasons why every WKU student should go to WKU Football's first game

I can hear it now: “Ugh, so this person expects all 20,000 of WKU’s students – local and out-of-town – to attend the first game? This nut is being completely unrealistic.”

Yes, I expect 20,000 students to attend the home opener against Rice.

*Sarcasm*

With WKU Football’s home opener against Rice just one week away, it is time to rile the troops.

1. The game is on a Thursday night

You know what this means? To the kiddos who bounce out of Bowling Green the second their Friday 9:10am class is over: you have no excuse. You are on campus, so why not make the most of it and go to the game? Unless Hilligans…or wherever the cool kids go nowadays…is hoppin’ at 7pm, you are going to have a better time at the Houch. I give you permission to go to Hilligans afterward.

2. 7:00 PM

Do I really need to elaborate? Ok, yes I will.

Last year I made $1 every time someone complained about the games starting before noon. I ended up with $10,000. I kid, I kid.

I completely understand if you are studying for a test or have some kind of team practice and you cannot make it to the game. However, if you do not have anything scheduled, what are you really doing at 7pm? Unless you are having a late dinner that lasts for 3 hours, I imagine you are not doing much. This is prime time, people.

3. #24 in the Nation (2015)

Many of you [students] were probably in elementary or middle school when Houchens-Smith Stadium expanded into the 23k seater it is today. This was about the same time WKU Football’s records were less than glorious. Attendance began to suffer. The excuse was always “We will come back when the team is better.” Well, the team is better. The team is a “5 straight winning seasons, 3 bowl appearances, 2 bowl wins, 1 conference championship, and 1 top 25 finish” kind of better. You asked for a top 25 team, and WKU Football delivered. It is your time to show up.

4. It is part of the college experience

Because what is an article without some clichés? Take a break from the Ramen Noodles and binge watching a Netflix Original. Get up, go outside, and have some fun watching your team. Plus, it is FREE for students. Yes, F-R-E-E (with your student ID).

5. New Swag

The new uniforms are not only awesome, but they are a touching tribute to the late, legendary head coach Jimmy Feix AND homage to the Spirit that is WKU. Along with a select few in the FBS, WKU has set the bar for eye-catching, sleek uniforms. Go check them out.

6. Touchdowns & Trick Plays

Do not listen to speculation from people who do not know the difference between a touchdown and touchback. Do not let the rumor mill discourage you from attending the game. Yes, we lost some amazing players: as we do every year…as does every team, every year.

WKU Football is still a high-powered offense. We have Taywan Taylor, Forrest Lamp, Max Halpin, Ace Wales, D’Andre Ferby, Nacarius Fant, and Nicolas Norris just to name a few. On defense, we have TJ McCollum, Marcus Ward, Branden Leston, Joel Iyiegbuniwe…again, just to name a few. The team has explosive players, veterans, and young playmakers. Let’s stop acting like we lost the entire team from 2015.

We have got to stop talking down to this group of QBs. Just remember, back in the day, Kawaun Jakes was our quarterback and some people did not give Doughty a chance. Fans even doubted Doughty back when Petrino was coach. Give these guys an opportunity to prove themselves before marginalizing their entire season before it starts! I have a feeling they will prove everyone wrong.

There will be touchdowns. There will be a lot of them. Whether it comes from our QB or not…I do not care. A touchdown is a touchdown, and a win is a win.

7. Super Brohm Bros.

From the Ville to the Hill, the gang is all here: the Brohm brothers, that is. Joining head coach Jeff Brohm and director of football operations Greg Brohm, is little brother, quarterbacks coach, and co-offensive coordinator Brian Brohm. I have a feeling you are looking at the next Harbaughs’. Enjoy every moment you can while Coach [Jeff] Brohm is still at WKU; teams have already noticed his success and will not hesitate to contact him.

Don’t forget Coach Brady Brohm (son of Jeff), either! At this rate, you are looking at a head coaching star in the making. Sometimes, you cannot even tell the difference between the coaches and Brady: pacing up and down the sideline, hands on hips, shifting his cap, and getting hype after big plays.

BONUS: Big Red

Big Red is only the greatest mascot in the entire world. Get your cameras ready, because you will want...no, you will need...a picture of yourself with Big Red.
