10 Reasons Why WKU Should Pack the Houch Against Vandy

Seeing as how WKU’s next home game is against Vanderbilt and only 9 days away, I found this to be an appropriate time to write another classic Red Towel Roundup blog. You know, the one where I list 5-10 reasons why you should go to the game, call out lazy fans, and make it my life mission to Pack the Houch?

Brace yourselves for you are about to receive the ultimate 10 Reasons Why WKU Should Pack the Houch Against Vandy.

1. The first time an SEC team will play at the Houch

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is the first time – at least in WKU Football’s modern era – that an SEC team is traveling to Houchens-Smith Stadium. This is kind of a big deal. Sure Vandy is no Alabama, but it is not every day that the Hilltoppers get to host the prestigious football conference (that has some select less-than-prestigious members *cough, Vanderbilt and UK, cough*).

2. The first P5 team to play at the Houch since 2010

The last time the Hilltoppers hosted a Power 5 Conference team (P5) was in 2010 against Indiana. Unfortunately, the Tops lost 38-21. It has been six years too long since that game. A W against a P5 team at Houchens-Smith Stadium would be a huge boost in confidence and generate a lot of hype for the remainder of the season.

3. The game is on a Saturday…at 3:30

Let's take a a quick look-see at this fine list I have here:

-The game is not on a weekday ✔

-The game is not at 11am ✔

Oh look, 99% of Hilltopper Nation can’t make an excuse, now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. 67 miles of separation

That is the total distance between WKU and Vandy. Not much. Although the matchup has not met "heated rivalry" status, it would not take much effort for a Vanderbilt fan to hop on I65 and head to the Hill. There is just something about beating a team near you that is extremely satisfying.

5. WKU showed UP last year

With that being said, I do not know how well Vandy's fans will travel. Vandy's first two games have been at Vanderbilt Stadium with an average of 29,965 in attendance (74% of total capacity). Regardless, Hilltopper Nation seems enthusiastic about this matchup whether it is due to the distance or the fact that Vandy is in the SEC. Last year, not only did the team defeat the Commodores, but WKU fans showed up: sparking many pictures, memes, and videos that indicated the Hilltoppers may have outnumbered Vandy fans.

Keep it up, folks!

6. Our last chance to beat an SEC team during the regular season

Unfortunately, Alabama handed WKU their first loss of the season (and hopefully only one). After Vanderbilt (and Houston Baptist), the Tops go into strictly conference play. A win is a win is a win, but a win is so much sweeter when it is over an SEC team.

It is easy to pick on Vandy after some pretty terrible seasons, buttttt they just beat MTSU 47-24. Do not sleep on them too much.

Not too hot (hopefully) and not too cold.

However, I am sure if the cloud coverage and dew point are not just perfect, then some fans will not show up. Don't be that person.

8. OMG Jordan Rodgers & JoJo from The Bachelor will be there!

*says sarcastically*

Yes, The Bachelor's Jordan Rodgers played for Vanderbilt. Yes, he is the younger brother of Green Bay Packer's Aaron Rodgers. Yes, he does something or another with the SEC Network. Whoop-dee-doo.

I really do not know if he and JoJo will be in attendance. But hey, if that is what persuades you to go to the game...

YA, I TOTALLY HEARD JORDAN RODGERS AND JOJO WILL BE AT THE GAME!

9. Monster Numbers

During the home opener, our beloved Tops put up some monster numbers and a very solid win.

Mike White (QB) - 25/31 (80%), 517 yards, and 3 TDs

Taywan Taylor (WR) - 165 yards

Nicholas Norris (WR) - 147 yards, 2 TDs

Ace Wales (RB) - 58 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, and 44 receiving yards

Let's not forget the defense either. Those boys held their own - better than most teams - against #1 Alabama.

10. Jeff Brohm

This is all you need.
